What an HDU is
A High Dependency Unit is for children who are unwell enough to need continuous observation and more frequent nursing care than a general ward, but who do not need full intensive care.
Round-the-clock cover
The unit runs 24 hours, every day. A Resident Medical Officer (RMO) is on duty throughout, including the full night shift, together with the nursing team.
Admission is a clinical decision
The doctor on duty decides whether a child needs HDU care, general ward admission or referral. The team explains the plan, the likely costs and how guardians can ask questions.
If more care is needed
Children who need care beyond the unit’s capability are transferred to an appropriate higher-level facility. The team will explain this early. Do not wait for an online reply during an emergency.
